About Chipping Norton

Chipping Norton

Chippy sits high on a ridge above the Glyme Valley, its broad market square still recognisably medieval in layout even as the buildings around it wear their Georgian and Victorian coats with quiet confidence. The name gives the game away: "chipping" comes from the Old English for market, and trading has been the point of this place for the best part of a thousand years. The Wednesday market continues that tradition, filling the square with fruit and vegetable stalls, local cheese, flowers and household goods. Around the edges, independent shops hold their own: delis with good bread, a greengrocer, a butcher, a handful of gift shops that feel genuinely curated rather than tourist-formulaic.

On the corner of the market square, Jaffe & Neale is the kind of bookshop-café that makes you lose track of an hour without noticing: shelves of well chosen fiction and local interest titles, strong coffee, and tables where nobody hurries you along. A short walk down the hill brings you to The Theatre, the most westerly professional theatre in England, housed in a charming Victorian building that punches well above its weight with a year-round programme of drama, comedy, live music and cinema. On the approach from the south, the skyline is dominated by the chimney of Bliss Tweed Mill, a striking piece of Victorian industrial architecture that looks almost ecclesiastical from a distance. The mill closed decades ago and has been converted to apartments, but the chimney remains a landmark visible from miles around, and a useful way to orient yourself when driving the surrounding lanes. From Well Cottage, Chippy is the natural first stop for supplies, a morning coffee or an evening at the theatre.
