You don't need to be a petrolhead to feel the pull of Silverstone. The home of British motor racing sits just over the county line in Northamptonshire, less than forty minutes from the cottage. Whether you're there for the museum, a lap round the circuit, or the raw spectacle of a Grand Prix weekend, it's one of those places that gets under your skin.
The Silverstone Interactive Museum is genuinely impressive: a proper walk through the history of British motorsport, full of simulators and hands-on exhibits that children (and, let's be honest, most adults) find impossible to rush through. Allow a good couple of hours. For something more visceral, the circuit offers driving experiences ranging from gentle introductions to single-seater sessions that will leave your hands shaking on the steering wheel. Book well ahead for the popular ones; they sell out fast.
Then there are the race weekends. The British Grand Prix in July is the headline act, of course, but the calendar runs deep: MotoGP, the Silverstone Festival for classic cars, touring car championships and more. The atmosphere on a big race day is something else entirely. You hear the cars long before you see them. If you're visiting during a race weekend, we'd suggest arriving early and taking the back roads through Brackley and Syresham; the main approaches can slow to a crawl. Coming home to the quiet of the cottage afterwards is a particular kind of luxury.
“The first time I heard a Formula 1 car at full throttle, I understood what all the fuss was about. Silverstone on a Grand Prix weekend is pure electricity.”
All of this on the doorstep, and your own thatched cottage to come home to. Sleeps seven, less than a mile from Soho Farmhouse.
