Rollright Stones

Rollright Stones

On a quiet ridge above the rolling fields where Oxfordshire meets Warwickshire, a circle of weathered limestone has been standing for the better part of five thousand years. The Rollright Stones are one of the most atmospheric prehistoric sites in England, and they're barely fifteen minutes from the cottage.

There are actually three separate monuments here, each with its own character. The King's Men is the main stone circle: around seventy closely spaced stones forming a rough ring about thirty metres across. They're not towering like Stonehenge; they're human-scaled, pitted and lichen-crusted, and you can walk right up to them, touch them, sit among them. That intimacy is what makes the place special. Across the road stands the King Stone, a single weathered monolith looking out over Long Compton in the valley below. And a short walk east through the field brings you to the Whispering Knights, a cluster of five uprights that were once a burial chamber, leaning together as if sharing a secret. The local legend ties all three to a witch who turned a king and his army to stone, which tells you something about how long these monuments have stirred the imagination.

The site is open every day and managed by a small trust that keeps it beautifully low-key. There's an honesty box for the modest entry fee, a few information boards, and not much else. No gift shop, no cafe, no ropes keeping you at a distance. Visit on a weekday morning and you may well have the circle to yourself, with nothing but skylarks and the wind for company. The drive from Well Cottage takes you along the high road past Great Tew and through Chipping Norton, with wide views across the Cotswold plateau. It pairs well with a stop in Chippy for coffee or lunch afterwards. On the solstices the stones draw larger crowds for sunrise gatherings, which have their own quiet magic if that appeals.

“Go early, on a still morning. Stand inside the circle with nobody else around and you feel the weight of all those centuries. It's one of those places that doesn't need to explain itself.”
