Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway

Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway

There's something deeply satisfying about the hiss of a steam engine pulling away from a platform on a still afternoon. The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway is a volunteer-run heritage line tucked into the Chiltern foothills, and it feels like stepping into a gentler decade entirely.

The line runs along a restored stretch of the old Watlington branch, roughly four miles through quiet Buckinghamshire countryside between Chinnor and Princes Risborough. Volunteers keep the whole thing alive: the engines, the signals, the beautifully maintained stations. You can ride behind a proper steam locomotive or one of the vintage diesels, and the pace is exactly right. Slow enough to watch the hedgerows drift past, fast enough that it still feels like a real journey. Children love it, obviously, but so do the adults who find themselves unexpectedly moved by the smell of coal smoke and the rhythm of the wheels on old track.

The railway runs regular services on weekends and during school holidays, with special events through the year (their Santa specials sell out quickly, so book early if that appeals). Chinnor itself is a pleasant village with a good pub or two, so it's easy to build a half-day around the trip. From Well Cottage the drive takes about forty minutes, most of it through lovely country. It pairs well with a stop in Thame or Watlington on the way back.

“Honestly, I wasn't expecting much, but the whole thing is done with such care. The kids were thrilled and I found myself grinning like one of them.”
