Well Cottage in Ledwell, Oxfordshire has three sitting rooms; each one distinct, each with its own mood. Afternoons drift into the library or garden, and evenings almost always end up by the fire.

The cottage has been designed for groups who want space to spread out without losing the sense of being together. From the flagstone kitchen where everyone gathers in the morning to the two inglenook sitting rooms — one for reading, one for games — and the library where a writing desk faces the garden, every room earns its place. In the evenings, either inglenook fireplace makes a natural gathering point; logs are supplied. Outside, the walled garden and the quiet Cotswold countryside beyond complete the picture.

A room for every mood

The living room, for the fire and a film

The main living room is where the house gathers once the light has gone. Sink into the blue armchairs in front of the great stone inglenook, logs supplied and the fire lit, or settle in for a film on the smart television with the low beams overhead. Deep sofas, soft lamplight and a fire that draws everyone back to the same room: this is where most evenings at Well Cottage end up.

The snug, for games and quiet

Across the hall, the snug is the smaller and more private of the sitting rooms: exposed stone walls, a deep sofa and the old winding stair rising in the corner. The games table is set and ready, whether that means cards after dinner or a jigsaw that quietly takes over the week. When the rest of the house is busy, it is also the easiest place to slip away to with a book and a cup of tea.

The library, for books and working from home

The library is the quietest of the three, lined with a thousand books and an old Morley spinet, with a writing desk set into the window looking out over the garden. Full-fibre broadband runs to the cottage, so it doubles neatly as a place to work: pull the door to, take a call at the desk, then close the laptop and step straight out into the garden. Homework, emails or a long read, it is a room built for concentrating.
