Well Cottage in Ledwell, Oxfordshire has four bedrooms across two floors: a king, a cosy single, a twin tucked under the eaves and the super-king principal room. Bed linen and towels are provided; all you need to bring is yourself.
Each bedroom has its own character. The principal suite — a super king — sits in the oldest part of the house under dramatic oak beams. The king room has a wide outlook toward the garden. The twin is tucked quietly under the eaves: two beds, low beams, a shuttered window. And the single is a proper room in its own right, with a stone wall, a small bookshelf and a window onto the lane — perfect for a teenager or a solo traveller.
What guests remember most about the nights here is the quiet — a deep, country quiet, with no traffic and no streetlight to soften it. Step out into the garden before bed and the sky is thick with stars: Ledwell sits far enough from any town that on a clear night the Milky Way shows overhead, and you tend to stand out there a good deal longer than you meant to.
And then the mornings. The dawn chorus arrives early and unhurried — blackbirds and wrens, a woodpecker somewhere in the trees, the hedgerows full of it. Leave a window cracked and you wake to birdsong rather than an alarm, the light coming up slowly through the shutters. It is, most guests agree, the nicest possible way to be woken.
