There are plenty of pretty cottages in the Cotswolds; there are fewer that are genuinely thatched, genuinely old, and genuinely comfortable to stay in. Well Cottage is all three. It sits in Ledwell, a hamlet of a few houses just outside Great Tew, its honey-coloured ironstone walls under a deep, freshly laid thatch, with a stone well on the green outside that gives the cottage its name. It is Grade II listed, sleeps seven across four bedrooms, and is less than a mile from Soho Farmhouse — but the first thing most guests notice is simply how much character the building has before you have even opened the door.
The thatched roof was stripped back and re-laid from scratch in early 2026 by a local master thatcher and his team — several weeks of work that should see it good for another twenty-five years, and which helps keep the cottage cool through high summer. Inside, the two inglenook fireplaces are the heart of the house: deep, worn, and made for wood-smoke evenings with a drink and a book. Add heavy oak beams overhead, worn flagstones underfoot, deep window seats and thick stone walls, and you have the kind of interior that only a couple of centuries of use can produce — the sort of place that photographs beautifully but, more to the point, feels wonderful to be in.
Over 2023 and 2024 the whole house was carefully restored — keeping everything that makes it special and quietly adding the comforts you'd hope for: a properly equipped Aga kitchen, good beds and fast Wi-Fi. And the setting matches the house: single-track lanes, a walled garden loud with birdsong, the Falkland Arms at Great Tew five minutes away, and the whole of the north-Oxfordshire Cotswolds on the doorstep. A thatched cottage should come with a view worth having, and this one does.
